Rohan Vaidya, 36, and Kaustubh Vaidya, 31, run a fish export company, Rock Frozen Food, in Mumbai. They frequently visit other countries on business and went to Malaysia after a company there, Miss Lee Frozen Foods, placed an order, said the Dombivli police. Acting on the family’s complaint, they have registered a case against unknown persons for the abduction.

Rajeev Vaidya, uncle of the brothers, said in his complaint that the brothers left India at 11.15pm and after reaching Malaysia in the early hours, checked into Hotel Grand Orchard (An internet search shows this hotel is in Kuala Lumpur, though the complaint did not specify the city the brothers were in). At 6.15am on August 2, Kaustubh told his wife Sayli that they had a successful meeting with their clients. They would meet again in the evening, and have dinner with them. Around 11.30pm, both called up their father Prakash, saying they had been kidnapped by some people who were threatening dire consequences if a ransom of Rs 1 crore was not paid.

Prakash immediately got in touch with Rajeev, who tweeted about the incident to Swaraj and Thane police and sought help for his nephews. The family received several calls from the siblings on August 3, between 8 and 11pm, repeating the demand. After this, Rajeev lodged a complaint with Dombivli police on Saturday.

Vijaysingh Pawar, senior inspector of Dombivli police station, said, “We have registered a case under section 364A (kidnapping for ransom) and 387 (putting person in fear of death or of grievous hurt, in order to commit extortion).”

When contacted, Rajeev Vaidya refused to speak, saying the family is in trauma and not in a position to comment.
