New Delhi: The Patiala House Court on Thursday again reserved the order for quantum of punishment for November 20 to be awarded to Naresh Sherawat and Yashpal Singh for killing Hardev Singh and Avtar Singh in Mahipalpur area of South Delhi during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

When told that one of the convicts had an ailment, he was asked to bring documents so his treatment could continue in jail.  Kuldeep Singh said that when the judge asked whether he wanted further compensation, he said he only wanted death sentence for the convicts.

The court had on Wednesday convicted the two accused — the first conviction in the cases reopened by the SIT constituted by the Union Government in 2015.

Additional Sessions Judge Ajay Pandey reserved the order following arguments.

The counsel for the victims — Gurbaksh Singh and HS Phoolka — argued for the death sentence, saying it was a rarest of rare case. While hearing the case, the judge asked the two surviving victims — Kuldeep Singh and Sangat Singh — about the injuries they had sustained, their businesses in 1984 and the compensation they had received so far. The judge also asked the profession of the convicts.
