Amid rising cases, 12-day lockdown for Chennai

The Tamil Nadu government has imposed a complete lockdown in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram from June 19 to June 30.

Certain relaxations will be provided for essential services. Hospitals, testing centres, labs and medical-related activities will remain functioning.Flight and train services will remain operational as per protocol. However, rental cabs and autorickshaws will not be allowed to ply for the period except for emergency cases. The authorities have appealed people not to commute using vehicles and also to buy essential items from shops within a 2 km radius.

The government has allowed grocery and vegetable shops to function from 6 am to 2 pm. Shops selling essential commodities shops and mobile shops will also be allowed to function between 6 am and 2 pm.

Hotel and restaurants can function from 6 am to 8 pm but only takeaway services will be allowed. Tea shops will also not be permitted to open. Amma canteens and community kitchens will continue to remain open.

Permission will be granted to caretakers of the ill, differently-abled as well as the elderly to commute in these districts.

Apart from this, there will be a complete shutdown on the two Sundays that fall within this period ie June 21 and June 28. No shops will be allowed to open on these two days.The decision comes after an expert committee met Chief Minister K Palaniswami and advised the state government to scale down lockdown relaxations and prevent the further spread of coronavirus.

On Sunday, Tamil Nadu registered 1,974 new coronavirus cases pushing the overall tally to 44,661 and 38 people died of the virus, raising the fatality count to 435 in the state.
