Airlines to charge for hand baggage on domestic flights

June 27, 2015 06:54 PM

New Delhi: Passengers on domestic flights may soon have to pay extra for check-in baggage and those who choose not to carry such luggage will be rewarded for travelling light.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is considering a proposal to allow airlines to charge for cabin baggage, The Indian Express reported.

Consumers who choose not to carry check-in luggage will be rewarded for travelling light through an incentive scheme, “zero baggage fare”, according to broad guidelines being firmed up by the airlines in consultation with the DGCA.

The regulatory body, which received an application to introduce “zero baggage fare” from no-frills carriers such as IndiGo, SpiceJet and AirAsia India, has held a round of consultation with the airlines.

“Airlines had sought permission to abolish the concept of free baggage and provide incentives to passengers who travel without luggage. We are trying to formulate a mechanism to ensure the discount is uniform across airlines, and to allow airlines to charge for check-in baggage,” said a senior DGCA official who did not want to be named.

Under the proposal, passengers who travel light will get discounts while booking tickets.

The proposal is in contrast to the DGCA’s stand in June 2014, when it directed AirAsia India against charging passengers for check-in baggage.

The airline, which was then yet to commence operations, planned to charge Rs 199 for check-in baggage weighing up to 15 kg if it is paid while booking the ticket, and Rs 300 if payment is made at the airport.
