Every year 12th October is known as World Arthritis Day, but we need to understand what is “Arthritis”. Arthritis is one term used for many types of rheumatic diseases such as gout, lupus, osteoarthritis, ankylosing, spondylitis and rheumatoid arthritis. This day raises awareness of arthritis around the world.

Arthritis is the inflammation of one or more joints and is not just a disease in the elderly, but also
effects at any age causing pain and stiffness and worsens with age. About 2/3 of arthritis patients are
under the age of 65 years.

It is more prevailing in urban population due to sedentary lifestyle and change in eating habits.
Less physical activity that leads to reduce in muscle mass and decreases bone strength.

Now is the time to make people aware of this disease. As we compare our life style with our ancestors, we are doing very less amount of physical activities which is leading to obesity and further weakened muscles. This effect deprives a person to overall reducing the ability to conduct daily activities, ability to walk, poor cardiovascular health and worsening diabetes, thus reduces the quality of life and causes mental and physical activity.

One should maintain ideal weight, having healthy diet which includes lots of fruits, vegetable and herbs which helps to reduce inflammation, be regular with exercise and stay active.

This day reminds us how change in our lifestyle and eating habits is leading us to the dangerous disease, which we are taking lightly. This day teaches us about the different aspects and types of arthritis we can have in our lifetime. There is no cure for arthritis, the right treatment can help us to maintain the symptoms and make lifestyle changes.

Thus, it is rightly said that “good health is not something we can buy. However, it can be an extremely
valuable saving account” – Anne Wilson Schaef
