Barbados calls snap election weeks after becoming Republic

December 29, 2021 12:03 PM

Barbados PM Mia Mottley has called for a snap general election on January 19.

The move comes weeks after the Caribbean country removed Britain's Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state and became the world's youngest Republic.

In October, Barbados had elected Sandra Mason as the country's first-ever President. She was sworn in as President on November 30.
