Surendran K Pattel, an attorney of Indian-origin, was sworn-in as the judge of 240th Judicial District Court in Texas on January 1.
Pattel, who was born to daily wagers in Kerala, worked as a labourer and beedi roller to assist his parents.
The 51-year-old received his law degree in 1995 and began practising in Kerala before practising in Supreme Court.
