Gul Gule / Banana Gulgule Recipe

Here is a quick and easy snack that you can munch on along with a hot cup of coffee or tea.A simple yet tasty snack that takes in very few ingredients and has a dominating flavour of ripe banana.

Ingredients:
jaggery – 1/4 cup
water – half cup
ripe banana ( yalakki balehannu) – 4
wheat flour – 1 cup
hot ghee – 2 tbsp
salt – as per taste
fennel seeds – half tsp
cardamom powder – half tsp
cooking soda – 1/4 tsp (OPTIONAL)
Oil – for frying the gulgule

Method:
Firstly in a cup take quarter cup of jaggery in powdered form.Add half cup of water to it and stir with a spoon until jaggery is completely dissolved in water.
Now, in a mixing bowl take 4 ripe bananas and mash them to make a fine past. You can instead grind them in a mixer grinder to make fine paste.
To the prepared banana paste add 1 cup of wheat flour and mix well.
Now add jaggery syrup(jaggery dissolved in half cup water) little at a time and mix thoroughly to make slightly thick batter.
Add 2 tbsp of hot ghee. This adds crispiness to the gulgule.
Add salt as per taste, half tsp of fennel seeds and half tsp of cardamom powder.Mix again.
Mix all the ingredients really well and allow the batter to rest for about 30 minutes.
Finally add quarter tsp of cooking soda.Adding soda is optional however it gives a crispy outer layer to the gulgule while making them soft from inside. Also adding soda makes sure gulgule puff up nicely when fried in oil.
Heat sufficient amount of oil in a kadai to deep fry the gulgule. Pinch small portions of the prepared batter, and drop them in hot oil.
Fry on medium flame until they turn golden brown in colour.
Have these tasty gulgule with a cup of hot tea or coffee and enjoy!
